Excell was once again proud to support the world-famous London Marathon, delivering temporary power and distribution across all start line infrastructure as the event returned to the capital for another landmark year. Working closely with organisers, we continued to play our part in supporting the marathon’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030.
Sustainability remained a key focus in 2026, with further expansion of battery storage across the site, both for the contractors compound and Red start. Where generators were still required, they were powered using HVO fuel, a cleaner alternative to diesel that has already contributed to significant emissions reductions over recent years.
With power supplied to all assembly areas, marquees and start lines, runners were able to enjoy the full pre-race experience, with music, entertainment and refreshments creating an electric atmosphere from arrival through to the start. We also supported the hospitality areas and athletes’ village, ensuring elite competitors had the facilities required to prepare in comfort ahead of a truly historic race.
And historic it certainly was. The 2026 event delivered one of the greatest days in marathon history, headlined by Sabastian Sawe, who produced a groundbreaking performance to win the men’s race in 1:59:30, becoming the first athlete ever to run a sub-two-hour marathon under official race conditions and setting a new Marathon World Record.
He was pushed all the way by Yomif Kejelcha, who also dipped under the two-hour mark with 1:59:41, underlining the extraordinary standard of this year’s race.
In the women’s race, Tigst Assefa delivered another exceptional performance, winning in 2:15:41 and setting a new women’s-only world record, further cementing her place at the very top of the sport.
Performances like these highlight not only the global significance of the London Marathon, but also its reputation as one of the fastest and most competitive courses in the world—where records are not just challenged, but redefined.
